Research Title: 'A Woman of Experience': Authority, Expertise, and the Nahua Tiçitl in the Florentine Codex
Megan's research examines the tiçitl, a medical practitioner in Mexica (Aztec) society which has often been translated in European sources as a midwife. This project re-examines the depiction of the tiçitl in the Florentine Codex, an encyclopaedia of Mexica life, to understand how she was constructed as a medical expert in the contact zone of early colonial Mexico. Alongside her degree, Megan works as a Research Assistant for the Oxfordshire Health Humanities Project, and is interested more broadly in the history of reproductive health.
