Regionalism in Modern European History

The aim is to look at the development of regional identities within state structures since the late nineteenth century and how they linked to regional government bodies or other regional organisations designed to promote the interests of the region, for example economic development, tourism, agriculture and preserving regional cultures.


Speakers: 

Dr Terry Cudbird will talk about his new book: The Origins of Economic Regions in France. He gained his DPhil in 2021 and is an Associate Member of the History Faculty.

Peter George will talk about his forthcoming DPhil thesis - Discourses of identity and dialect writing in the press, c.1890-1940 in France, Britain and Jersey.

Discussants:

Dr Talitha Ilacqua, Durham University, who published the following book in 2024: Inventing the Modern Region: Basque Identity and the French Nation-State (Manchester University Press).

Dr Timo Aava, Estonia/Oxford Postdoctoral Visiting Fellow at St Anthony’s College.The talks will be followed by drinks from 18:00.
