This course examines the history of 20th- and 21st-century Europe by exploring the ways in which national, regional, and European histories intersected across the century from 1918 to 2020. Its aim is not so much to compare the history of individual European countries, as to explore how far it is possible to interpret the history of 20th-century Europe in new ways. As Europe moves into a new, and uncertain present, the history of the twentieth century acquires a new and retrospective shape. And the course will place the emphasis on the changing shape of the historiography, and its relationship to the present.
The course is intended for those with prior experience of the subject matter, and those coming new to the history of twentieth-century Europe.
