On Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 November, the Faculty of History and St John's College celebrated the inaugural lecture of Professor Sarah Knott, Hillary Rodham Clinton Chair in Women's History.

Professor Knott, St John's College and the Faculty of History were honoured to welcome Secretary Clinton for these celebrations.

A number of events were held across the two days, beginning with the inaugural lecture itself, held in examination schools on Monday evening. Professor Knott’s Inaugural Lecture traced the emergence of ‘care’ as a liberatory feminist concept in the 1980s. In this lecture, Professor Knott made a compelling case for a full-blown history of care to complement the existing work of feminist sociologists and economists.

The lecture was followed by a formal dinner at St John's and a roundtable the following day titled 'The Politics of Care'. This roundtable brought together leading feminist figures in US politics and activism, including Ai-Jen Poo, director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, and scholars of care. They asked, how were political figures and activists part of the emergence of “care” as a policy concern in the 1980s and how does this history help us better understand our current moment?
