MSt and MPhil in History

The MSt in History and the MPhil in History are umbrella programmes, containing nine strands; you can find out more about each strand by clicking on the links (images) below. You must apply for a particular strand and the vast majority of students stay with the strand they applied for, but it may be possible to change strand, should this be necessary. All strands take approximately ten MSt students and one MPhil student per year.

The MSt may be taken on a full-time (9 months) or part-time (21 months) basis. It is deliberately flexible, combining broad exposure to historical theory and method with opportunities to specialise. The MPhil is a 21-month course that can only be taken on a full-time basis. There is some extra coursework, but the main difference with the MSt is a substantial research project. Both the MSt and MPhil can serve either as a complete postgraduate qualification or as a springboard for doctoral study. Skills training and option-choice are designed to be open-ended, with students wishing to progress to a doctorate being able to gain the knowledge and training they need.
