The motif of wisdom in the Byzantine ‘Book of Syntipas the Philosopher’

The Book of Syntipas the Philosopher’ (‘BSP’) was translated from Syriac into Greek during the last decades of the 11th century. The prologue implicitly situates this work within didactic court literature. Much of the ‘BSP’ unfolds in a manner common to all Eastern versions, with two distinctive sections – the Ten Ethical Chapters and the Twenty Questions and Answers on Kingship, Morality, and Fate – being more elaborate than in any other surviving tradition. Their topics additionally emphasise the didactic character of this work by elabo-rating on the importance of philosophical instruction and ethical life. This paper focuses on the motif of wisdom and examines its impact on the architecture, narrative motivation, and character formation of the ‘BSP’. It also considers possible resonances of this topos for Byzantine reading audiences.

The Studies in Byzantine Epigraphy series testifies to an ever-greater focus on inscriptions within Byzantine Studies. The present, inaugural volume includes selected papers from the two panels dedicated to Byzantine Epigraphy held at the XXIII International Congress of Byzantine Studies in Belgrade, August 2016, and the XV International Congress of Greek and Latin Epigraphy in Vienna, August/September 2017. The papers, as indeed the events for which they were initially produced, celebrate both the progress and the promise of epigraphic research within medieval and early modern scholarship as a whole.

This collection of 37 essays has been prepared by Ida Toth and Andreas Rhoby to provide a broad coverage of Istanbul's inscriptional material dating back to the period between the 4th and the 15th centuries. It is intended as a comprehensive teaching tool and also as a dependable vademecum to the extant traces of Istanbul&#x2019;s rich late antique and medieval epigraphic legacy. <a href=""></a>

Abstract: The authors reflect on methodological and terminological problems related to the critical fields of Byzantine and so-called Post-Byzantine Art in the Balkans. Departing from the traditional, frequently controversial, issues of continuity and identity, this chapter proposes a more effective conceptual framework, which favours the ideas of multiculturality, hybridity, and horizontal exchange. The present essay also addresses the questions of cultural history, and, especially, of Western influences in Orthodox painting after the 15th century, and it urges that art of any period should be measured against the standards of its own time. More generally, it suggests that the reception of Orthodox Christian art in the Balkans ought also to be considered to fall within the purview of scholars of the Western Renaissance, as well as of Ottoman Studies, so as to ensure fruitful academic dialogue across disciplines.

Fictional Storytelling in the Medieval Eastern Mediterranean and Beyond
The BSP survives as an eleventh-century translation from Syriac into Greek, whose plot revolves around the theme of the role of philosophers in princely education, and as advisors to rulers. The text features an array of colourful characters – a great king, a young prince, a wily wife, an erudite teacher, and seven wise men – and a series of twenty-four tales told by the protagonists in the main story. An epigram and a prologue disclose the identities of the author, and of the translator of the book into Greek, as well as of his patron, and help contextualize the early transmission of the BSP. Later Greek versions show some morphological, syntactical, lexical and stylistic modifications. Their linguistic range spans from the middle-register Byzantine koinē to several more liberal renditions into modern Greek. The printed editions of the BSP had a long run and wide circulation in Greek, as did their eighteenth- and nineteenth-century translations into Romanian, Bulgarian and Serbian.

The present book, the first collective volume entirely devoted to aspects of Byzantine epigraphy, mainly comprises papers delivered at two international meetings (Vienna 2010, Sofia 2011). The book is divided into four sections and includes among others the following contributions: after an introductory article about the “history” of the discipline of Byzantine epigraphy Cyril Mango tries to define the term “Byzantine inscription” and its limits. Vincent Debiais offers some interesting observations by comparing medieval Latin inscriptions from the West with Byzantine epigraphic traditions. The second section of the book bears the title “Methods of Editing Byzantine Inscriptions”: while the paper of Peter Schreiner discusses the urgent necessity of creating a new epigraphic initiative within Byzantine Studies, Walter Koch describes the Western medieval inscription projects in detail. Both Guglielmo Cavallo and Erkki Sironen discuss editorial guidelines while Charlotte Roueché stresses the advantages of creating online-corpora, and Joel Kalvesmaki describes his recently published epigraphic font “Athena Ruby”. The third section covers articles which report current epigraphic projects: two projects from Greece presented will be published within databases. Maria Xenaki discusses the epigraphic wealth of Cappadocia and its hardly studied graffiti. The last section is devoted to case studies articles. Their content ranges from Late Antiquity (Sencer Şahin, Mustafa Sayar) until the middle and the late Byzantine period (Ida Toth, Linda Safran).
