Firearms accidents in sixteenth-century England

Arms and Armour

Source material for the use of firearms in sixteenth-century England outside military contexts is sparse. This article uses coroners’ inquest reports to examine who used guns of what types, for what purposes, in different parts of England and at different phases of their diffusion. Artisans were prominent among early adopters, but by the end of the century yeomen were the most frequent gun owners. It shows what hazards guns with different firing mechanisms such as matchlocks and snaphances presented, the steps users took to mitigate such risks, and the severity of gunshot wounds, which caused two-thirds of victims of fatal firearms accidents to die instantly.

Coroners’ inquest juries in sixteenth-century England

Continuity and Change

Juries enabled the participation in local governance of those outside national and regional elites in early modern England. Yet their social range is disputed. We investigate coroners’ inquest juries in a range of communities and compare a sample of 148 juries in eleven counties, featuring 2024 jurors, with tax and muster records. These show that while the rural and urban middling sorts were disproportionately represented, the rich and poor were by no means excluded. As militarily able household heads, many jurors matched the wider demands of ‘respectable masculinity’, and this may be reflected in some of the verdicts they reached.

One day in the early 1520s John Byrcham, Robert Saumon, Bartholomew Storme and Robert Wyndell of Whitby went out fishing. As they headed back to port with their catch they were intercepted by a French warship and taken prisoner. They negotiated a ransom of £22 6s 8d to free themselves, their ship and their fish, and Byrcham went into Whitby and on to Bridlington to get the money from the ship’s owners, a widow called Elizabeth Dodys and William Browneflete, head of the town’s rich Augustinian Priory. Byrcham returned and paid off the French, who let the ship go. The crew’s relief did not last long, as they were captured by Scottish raiders before they could get back to harbour. The Whitby fishermen’s story belongs to the hidden history of Henry VIII’s wars. Henry’s posturing in European politics is well enough known, but the full impact of his wars on the people he ruled tends to be overlooked. Our attention is irresistibly drawn elsewhere: to his attacks on the church, the bloody politics of his court, or the social strains of enclosure, inflation and popular revolt. Yet Henry’s people spent something like half his reign at war, against the French, the Scots, the Gaelic lords of Ireland, rebels at home, or even England’s traditional allies in the Low Countries.

This book uses space-age science as well as traditional art-historical analysis to study the tombs of the Howard family, dukes of Norfolk, in Framlingham Church, Suffolk. The cover shows the tomb of the third duke, virtually disassembled, effigies omitted. Many of the tombs were first constructed in Thetford Priory but were transferred to Framlingham after the Dissolution, with changes to their design and construction presenting archaeologists, art-historians, documentary historians, and now space-age scientists, exciting challenges in the study and interpretation of the surviving monuments.

This chapter discusses the Chronicles' accounts of England's engagement with countries in Western Europe, including France, Spain, the Netherlands, and Germany. The decision of compilers to chronicle English history up to the eve of publication meant that several developments featured in 1577 were also included in the edition of 1587. What was discussed is interesting, what was omitted equally so. Readers were warned that in treating the reign of Elizabeth one could not ignore ‘the great stirres and alterations which have happened in other forren nations’, but in practice coverage was patchy and the course of events often had to be reconstructed by the reader.

The period 1350 to 1750 saw major developments in European warfare, which not only had a huge impact on the way wars were fought, but are also critical to long-standing controversies about state development, the global ascendancy of the West, and the nature of ‘military revolutions’ past and present. These chronological and geographical limits have produced substantial confusion about how the conduct of war changed. In 1545 Roger Ascham, humanist scholar and educationalist, published Toxophilus, a dialogue in which an enthusiast for the longbow expounds to a sceptic the many benefits of archery for personal development and national defence. Ascham was worried that archery practice was in catastrophic decline. He claimed that in the great town where he set his dialogue, ‘there be a thousande good mens bodies, yet scarse x [tha]t vseth any great shoting’. Ascham’s concern was neither idiosyncratic nor novel, but how justified was it? And if archery was in decline, how accurate was Ascham’s diagnosis of the causes?

Historians have repeatedly compared Henry VII with his continental contemporaries, Louis XI of France and Ferdinand of Aragon. Around 1600 the writers of politic history emphasized Henry’s wisdom in drawing lessons in statecraft from his fellow monarchs. By 1900 analysts of the ‘New Monarchy’ placed more stress on the common circumstances that underlay the revival of monarchical power, but thereby raised awkward questions about similarities and differences in the development of national states. Latterly a model of European state formation has been constructed which sets Henry’s kingship less comfortably alongside those of Louis and Ferdinand. This should lead us not to abandon, but to reshape the attempt to set Henry in his European context.

While the debate on the role of war in state development in early modern Europe has ranged widely, the participants have not answered its most fundamental question to the satisfaction of most historians. The difficulty has been how to assess whether war was more important than other factors as a driver of state formation. In practice it is more fruitful to study the role of war within a multi-causal model, but to do this the interaction between war and other factors such as judicial, religious, ideological, and social change must be studied, preferably in detail but in comparative context.

Historians have long debated the effects of war on state formation in early modern Europe. Did military competition increase rulers' power over their subjects and forge more modern states, or did the strains of war break down political and administrative systems? This book seeks a rounded answer to these questions by comparing England and the Netherlands in the age of warrior princes such as Henry VIII and Charles V. It examines the development of new military and fiscal institutions, but goes beyond them to ask how mobilization for war changed political relationships throughout society. Towns in England, such as Norwich, York, Exeter, and Rye, are compared with towns in the Netherlands, such as Antwerp, Leiden, 's-Hertogenbosch, and Valenciennes, to see how the magistrates' relations with central government and the urban populace were modified by war. Great noblemen from the Howard and Percy families are set alongside their equivalents from the houses of Croÿ and Egmond to examine the role of recruitment, army command, and heroic reputation in maintaining the power of the nobility. The wider interactions of subjects and rulers in wartime are reviewed to measure how effectively war extended princes' claims on their subjects' loyalty and service; their ambitions to control news and public opinion and to promote national identity; and their ability to manage the economy and harness religious change to dynastic purposes. The book presents picture of societies and polities tested and shaped by the pressures of ever more demanding warfare.

Clearer understanding of Henry VII's reign is hindered not only by practical problems, such as deficiencies in source material, but also by its liminal position in historical study, at the end of the period conventionally studied by later medievalists and the beginning of that studied by early modernists. This makes it harder to evaluate changes in the judicial system, in local power structures, in England's position in European politics, in the rise of new social groups to political prominence and in the ideas behind royal policy. However, thoughtful combination of the approaches taken by different historical schools and reflection on wider processes of change at work in Henry's reign, such as in England's cultural and economic life, can make a virtue out of Henry's liminality. Together with the use of more unusual sources, such an approach enables investigation for Henry's reign of many themes of current interest to historians of the later Tudor period. These include courtly, parliamentary and popular politics, political culture, state formation and the interrelationships of different parts of the British Isles and Ireland.

Edmund Dudley, minister of Henry VII, was a man both personally extraordinary and yet representative of his age. He abandoned the normal cursus honorum of the legal profession to enter the king's service more suddenly than any of his contemporaries; yet he was one of many common lawyers newly influential in the king's councils of the later fifteenth and earlier sixteenth centuries. He was probably the only layman in Henry's inner circle to have studied at a university; yet within fifty years of his death most English statesmen of the first rank would have done so. In pursuing the king's interests, Dudley generated sufficient animosity to make himself one of the two scapegoats for Henry's policies tried and executed in 1509–10; yet it was more his manner, his efficiency and his political isolation than any difference of intent that distinguished him from Henry's other ministers. In pursuing his own interests he built a large landed estate faster than any of his colleagues, but their aims and eventual achievements were not so different from his. The one respect in which Dudley was unique was that he had leisure, while under arrest in the Tower of London, to commit to paper his thoughts on English government and society. The resulting treatise, The tree of commonwealth, enables us to juxtapose his stated ideals with his actions as a royal minister and as an influential layman. Thereby we may hope to shed new light on the relations between Church, State and lay elites on the eve of the English Reformation.

In so doing, it seeks to weigh continuities against change, and to assess the origins, nature and long-term significance of such change.

Something of the atmosphere of trench warfare, with its immobility and its desperation, has overcome the historiography of early Tudor politics. The most spectacular impasse concerns the fall of Anne Boleyn. Three scholars have recently set out and defended against one another divergent explanations of her fall. Professor Ives and Professor Warnicke can agree that Dr Bernard is wrong: Anne cannot possibly have been destroyed by a masterful and jealous king who may reasonably have believed her guilty of multiple adultery as charged. Dr Bernard and Professor Ives can agree that Professor Warnicke is wrong: Anne's fall cannot be attributed to her miscarriage of a deformed foetus, awakening the king's fears of witchcraft and its sixteenth-century stablemates, sodomy and incest. Professor Warnicke and Dr Bernard can agree that Professor Ives is wrong: Anne cannot have been ousted by a factional plot at court, coordinated by Thomas Cromwell and cynically using fabricated charges of adultery to hustle the king into destroying the queen and her partisans at a single blow.

Thomas Wolsey was England's leading statesman, churchman and patron of the arts for a period of over fourteen years. In that time England played a greater role in European politics than she had done for a century or more; there were bold initiatives in domestic government; the church faced the call for reform and the challenge of heresy; and the influence of the Renaissance was felt strongly in many areas of English culture. In this fully-illustrated volume, eleven expert contributors assess Wolsey's role in all these developments, from his patronage of music, sculpture, stained glass, goldsmiths' work and domestic and collegiate architecture, through his handling of the church and the criticism it evoked, to his management of politics, central and local government, and foreign affairs.
