This article offers a new genealogy of the New Left in Western Europe as it developed from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s. Differently from prevalent interpretations, it reassesses the historical influence of the Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962), and “Third-Worldism” more generally, in the genealogy of the new political cultures that flourished during the global 1960s. A whole generation of activists appropriated the memory of the anti-fascist Resistance, giving it a function that was not simply defensive but also proactive and merging the myth of the “betrayed Resistance” with the idea of imperialism as the “new Fascism”. The European civil war, which Enzo Traverso has defined the distinctive feature of the first half of the twentieth century, was thus reconfigured worldwide as a “global civil war”.

On 24 July 2020, French President Emmanuel Macron commissioned historian Benjamin Stora to report on the «questions regarding the memory of colonisation and the Algerian War». This article begins with an analysis of the report and its reception in France and Algeria, and it has two objectives. On the one hand, it examines the French debate on the memory of the Algerian War and colonization more generally. However, it also intervenes in a broader theoretical debate, asking whether memory studies have not unwittingly led to a discursive shift and replaced politics – understood as conflicts inscribed in social relations – with a distorted conception of «memory» as an ideology of «capitalist realism» (Fisher). To use the provocative title of a recent study (Gensburger and Lefranc, 2017), we might ask: are memory politics really useful? Do they shape reality?

Passato e Presente
The 60th anniversary of 1960, the ≪year of Africa≫, which embraces events spanning the five-year period from 1957-1962, has received only superficial attention in the media and in the academic world. This neglect applies above all, but is certainly not limited, to Italy, and is surprising for a number of reasons. That pivotal moment has become more and more significant within the context of contemporary phenomena and processes - namely decolonization and globalization - as well as the emergence of new political and institutional priorities. To these we need to add the impact of the events on the pre-1968 generations. In this light we have asked four Italian academics, with different age and research profiles, to reflect on how those events influenced their life and work choices, as well as what responses they elicit today.

Since 2017 three unusual yet similar historiographical works have been published in close succession. Similar in ambition, object and structure, these works are: Histoire mondial de la France, Storia mondiale dell’Italia and Historia mundial de España. All three share a sense of urgency as to the need to update historiographical tools and practices, in particular by critically reviewing the predominance of the national analytical framework in favour of a plurality of focal points capable of visualizing different spatialities, encompassing local, national and global. This article tests the limits and the potential of these approaches.

Memory Studies
Based on the analysis of files from the Department of Defence, and drawing on interviews with veterans and on their associations’ press, the article focuses on the Algerian War National Memorial in Paris, its long gestation and particularly its double, paradoxical status: that it is at the same time new and old, post-ideological and hyper-ideological. Thanks to its palimpsest configuration, this ‘third millennium memorial’ – as it was described by its creator (the artist Gérard Collin-Thiébaut) – has demonstrated itself to be perfectly tuned to that peculiar mode of relationship to the past that we can define as ‘postmodern’, a mode that is characteristic of what historian François Hartog called the presentist ‘regime of historicity’.

Hommes & Migrations

Forty years have gone by since France sent 1,200,000 conscripts (out of 44 million inhabitants) beyond the Mediterranean, to fight the supporters of independence from the Algerian National Liberation Front.
On the French lines the dead numbered 26,000 and the injured 300,000 – almost ten times the casualties on the Algerian side. Compared with
the American war in Vietnam, the Algerian war (which lasted the same number of years) mobilized a greater number of troops in proportion to the population and recorded five times the mortality rate.
Andrea Brazzoduro collected dozens of interviews of the survivors, to preserve their memories of that time, and based on their accounts reconstructs a crucial period in French history.
