My research centres on US political history during the 19th and 20th centuries, and particularly on the changing role of government in national life during that period.  I have written books on Lyndon Johnson’s ‘Great Society’ programme, and on the history of American education politics since World War II.  My other publications include essays on the New Deal, and comparative essays on US and Canadian social policy.  I am currently writing a book about the history of American responses to natural disaster, from the early republic to the present.
