Research Interests

My research interests are mainly in the social, intellectual, and cultural history of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century England particularly in the connections between people's mental outlook and their social circumstances, and how these changed over time. I am completing a book on the origin of modern sexual attitudes in the English-speaking world, which draws on the period's rich fictional and visual sources as well as on legal records and printed writings of all kinds.
