In collaboration with the University of Virginia, this project aimed to advance the scholarship of historians interested in any aspect of those territories facing the Atlantic Ocean from the early modern to the modern era. Coordinated by Will Pettigrew (Lincoln College) and Christa Dierksheide (University of Virginia) and supported by a benefaction from John Griffin of $150,000, the scheme supported research examining how transatlantic communities emerged, functioned, and fractured during this period.
Using state-of-the-art videoconference equipment at the Rothermere American Institute, scholars on both sides of the Atlantic met regularly to reflect on original research papers. The scheme also funded one-month research fellowships for graduate students from both universities to use each other’s archival materials and buttress the scholarly connections established via videoconference. Colloquia in April 2005 in Virginia and 2006 in Oxford provided an opportunity for historians at various stages of their careers to deliver research papers, augment transatlantic academic fellowship, and further international understanding.
