Modern Britain and Europe
1815-Present

Study of modern British, Irish, and European History at Oxford is unrivalled in its range and variety. Traditionally strong in political and religious history, Oxford’s British historians are now also at the forefront of new developments in social history, particularly in the cultural history of the Twentieth Century. At the same time, Oxford is fast becoming a major centre for the study of modern Irish History under the leadership of Professor Roy Foster.

The interests of Oxford’s European historians range from the re-making of Europe after the French Revolution to the rise and fall of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. They cover every major and most of the smaller countries of the continent from France to Russia; subjects on which they are pursuing research include nationalism, popular religion, the intellectual foundations of the modern state, the rise and varieties of feminism, childhood, migration and exile, the international financial order, and the modern metropolis.

Research initiatives are generated by the Modern European History Research Centre, and there is a vibrant seminar culture. Members of other faculties besides History contribute to this, and to the supervision of our research students
