Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages

Oxford is one of the world’s leading centres for the study of Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Research covers the whole period from the third to the fifteenth century, and from Britain and the Celtic World to Byzantium, the Near East and beyond. The range of expertise includes archaeologists, papyrologists, art historians, specialists in law, theology, music, and literature, as well as economic, political and cultural historians. The majority of these scholars are member of the History Faculty, but others come from the Faculties of Classics, Oriental Studies, Modern Languages, and English, as well as the Department of Archaeology. These organisational boundaries are no boundary to Oxford’s vibrant research culture either for Faculty members or for graduate students. Rather they promote an extraordinarily wide-ranging and diverse intellectual environment.
