Economic and Social History

Oxford is a leading-edge centre for the study of economic and social history through the application of modern social science theory and methods. Informed but not dictated to by economic and social theory, its historians are bringing new insights to traditionally central topics such as the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions, while also pioneering the newer research fields of gender, the family, work, environmental history, the economics of war and of empire, public utilities and consumer choice. The M.Phil in Economic and Social History is one of the leading qualifications in the subject, and a proven foundation for research degrees; the research culture is enhanced by a weekly seminar which attracts leading scholars from within the United Kingdom, from the United States, the Continent and the wider world.
