Students receive regular feedback on the content of their essays and their progress through tutorials. At the end of their first year students take four exam papers on the work they have studied that year. This exam, called the Preliminary Examination combines the functions of a qualifying exam with an objective assessment of individual performance. Finals are taken at the end of the third year and involve five written exam papers and the submission of an extended essay on a Special Subject and a thesis. Finals cover the work studied in the second and third years.
