Grants from the Arnold, Bryce, and Read Funds

Grants may be made to assist in meeting travel and other expenses (usually excluding accommodation and subsistence costs) incidental to the pursuit of a definitive piece of historical investigation, to members of the University who are pursuing a course of full-time study; contributions towards attendance at a conference or workshop, however, are considered to be outside the remit of these funds.

Applications for support in the Long Vacation and Michaelmas Term will be considered in Trinity Term, and those for support in Hilary and Trinity Terms in Michaelmas or Hilary Terms as appropriate. — These funds do not apply to Ancient History, for which support may be obtained from the Craven Committee.

  • Application forms may be downloaded from the Faculty's WebSite.
  • Completed forms, together with a confidential recommendation by your supervisor, should be returned to the Graduate Officer by Friday of Sixth Week of the term preceding the vacation or term in which you will incur the expenses. (Please ask your supervisor to hand you such a recommendation in a sealed envelope, with the supervisor's signature across the flap.) It is intended that decisions will be made shortly thereafter, so that they can be reported to the eighth-week meeting of the Faculty Board.
  • Applications from those reading BA courses will be considered only in the most exceptional circumstances, and in the allocation of the monies available priority will always be given to applications from those engaged in graduate research.
  • Please note that retrospective applications cannot be entertained, and also that students will be eligible for support from the above Funds only once in any one academic year.
  • Always ensure that you retain appropriate documentation for your expenditure for inclusion on the Faculty's record, usually the original receipts for fares or other approved costs, so that any allocated award can be released to you.

Enquiries and applications should be addressed to the History Graduate Office, Old High School for Boys, George Street, Oxford, OX1 2RL; e-mail: current.graduates@history.ox.ac.uk.
