During the applications round 2009-10 the History Faculty again expects to be offering college-linked awards for new doctoral students. These awards usually cover home/EU tuition fees only, and overseas candidates would have to raise the overseas portion of their fees from other sources. In addition, in each case the award-holder will have his or her college fees covered by the college, and receive some contribution towards maintenance. In some cases, access to college accommodation is guaranteed for one or more years. All fees and maintenance payments will be made over a three-year period (including any increases in University and College fees), conditional on the student continuing to make satisfactory progress. Further details are given in the table below. – In addition, we hope to link two Clarendon Fund Bursaries in History with Keble College and Pembroke College respectively.
There is no special applications procedure. All doctoral applicants will automatically be considered provided that they qualify themselves by applying for other funded awards: in the case of overseas students, Clarendon awards; in the case of home/EU students, AHRC or ESRC awards (whichever of these is appropriate); in consequence, your application for admission to the doctoral programme in History must have been received by 22 January 2010 at the latest. Please note that applicants must indicate their interest in being considered for Clarendon, AHRC, ESRC, and some other Oxford scholarship awards on their initial Oxford application. For details of these and other awards, and for links to application information, see elsewhere on this website (section F. Funding opportunities). The awards will go to the best students who apply for, but do not receive these other awards, according to the judgement of faculty and college selectors – provided that there are suitable candidates. You will see below that two colleges have expressed a preference as to the fields of interest of the candidate it would hope to appoint, and colleges’ existing academic profile may shape their final choices. However, the faculty and all colleges reserve the right to appoint the person who, in the view of the selectors, is the best candidate, within the parameters outlined above.
We would expect to be able to name the nominees for such awards in April/early May at the latest, but final decisions may be dependent on the confirmation of other awards. We reserve the right to prefer at that point candidates not previously notified whose achievements in the intervening period have made it clear that they would be appropriate recipients.
All those eligible will be considered on their academic merits, regardless of the colleges they have indicated a preference for or by which they have been accepted. However, a condition of taking up the award will be that the student migrates to the college linked with the award. A student who does not wish to migrate need not do so, and will then retain his or her place at the college to which he or she was initially assigned, but the award will in those circumstances be offered to another student.
Any queries about these awards should be directed in the first instance to graduate.admissions@history.ox.ac.uk.
