On 11th November 2011, the University of Oxford
will hold its first ever Humanities
Graduate Open Day. This will be a
unique opportunity for prospective students to find out
about graduate courses in Humanities subjects at the
University.
You’ll have a chance to find out how to apply for a graduate
course and find out about our extensive funding
opportunities, discover what the University has to offer in
relation to things like accommodation, career support,
libraries and sports, as well as the opportunity to visit
one of Oxford’s renowned colleges. The History Faculty will
host two sessions, one for prospective master's students and
the other for prospective doctoral students, in which the
Director of Graduate Studies, supported by academic and
administrative colleagues, will outline the academic
opportunities and advantages of reading for a postgraduate
History degree at Oxford, and also explain the Faculty's
expectations of a strong application dossier and prospective
student profile.
In order to attend the Humanities-wide event (and claim your
free lunch!), you’ll need to fill in the registration
form.
Applications for the 2011/2012
academic year have now closed.
History Faculty admissions will be governed by the following deadlines in the coming year. Note that your applications must be complete in every respect and have arrived in the University Graduate Admissions Office by the deadline. You will have the choice to submit your application on-line (for details see the University's Notes of Guidance).
All applicants may, and all except those listed below must, apply by one of the two following deadlines: Friday, 18 November 2011; Friday, 20 January 2012.
Master’s and doctoral applicants in Economic and Social History and History of Science and Medicine (viz., for the M.Sc. or M.Phil. in Economic and Social History, or M.Sc. or M.Phil. in History of Science, Medicine, and Technology, and M.Litt. or D.Phil. applicants planning to work within those specialist fields) may also apply by the later deadline of Friday, 9 March 2012. Before applying for doctoral study in one of these specialist fields, please check whether your project fits the profile of these research areas.
All applicants, in whatever field of study, wishing to be considered for the following major scholarships – Clarendon Fund bursaries, AHRC or ESRC scholarships, or for one of the Faculty’s own graduate awards – must apply by 20 January 2012 at the latest. Applicants for Clarendon awards are encouraged to apply by 18 November 2011, if possible.
The History Faculty’s guidance for applicants to graduate programmes is provided online as Admissions requirements and procedures.
As soon as overseas applicants are in receipt of a confirmed offer notification (i.e., when they have fulfilled their academic and financial conditions of acceptance) our Student Immigration office and the Faculty will prepare also their Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) which they require for their application to the UK Border Agency for a Tier 4 Student Visa. This is an online process which will generate a CAS number of which applicants are notified by e-mail; they will need to quote this number in all their communications with the UK Border Agency when submitting the required documentation for their Visa application. For further details about the process please consult the University's information about Visas and Immigration.
In addition to standard funding opportunities, the History Faculty is able to offer a number of college-linked graduate scholarships for doctoral research. All applicants for the faculty’s programmes who are eligible for any of these scholarships will automatically be considered for them. In every case, one condition of eligibility will be that candidates should have applied either (in the case of overseas applicants) for Clarendon bursaries or (in the case of Home/EU applicants) for AHRC or ESRC funding. For further information about these college-linked awards click here.
