Towards a New Understanding of Community, Nation and Empire in the Nineteenth Century
Workshop 1:
‘From Folk Culture to National Culture’

     This workshop was organized by David Hopkin and Ollie Douglas and attended by a wide range of scholars from Britain, Europe and North America. Participants considered how folklorists of nineteenth-century Europe contributed to nationalist programmes, both political and aesthetic, and explored the relationship between folklore and the development of social thought.
