The History Faculty Library is situated on the corner of Catte Street and Holywell Street. The main entrance is on Catte Street where there are six steps with a 90 cm-high handrail to the front lobby. Wheelchair access to the ground floor of the building is possible (with prior arrangement) via a ramp at the back of the building. Anyone wishing to make use of the ramp should please contact the Porter via telephone on (2)77250, or by coming to the front entrance and pressing a street-level bell at the bottom of the front steps.
Regular lavatories for readers are located in the basement of the building and are accessed via a spiral staircase (20 narrow steps). Access to an adapted lavatory on the ground floor is possible on request to the Porter, or to library staff.
The Library is situated on the first and second floors of the Faculty building. At present, there is no lift in the building, so access for readers with mobility problems can pose some difficulties. Entry to the Library is normally via a spiral staircase (24 narrow steps) at the front of the building, but arrangements can be made for readers who are unable to manage the front stairs to use the staff staircase at the back of the building instead.
Staff are happy to help by bringing books down to the ground floor for readers who are unable to use the stairs, or marked-up copies of reading lists (and your university card) may be handed in to the Porter who will pass them on to Libray staff to fulfil. A further possibility is to email the Library (library.history@bodleian.ox.ac.uk) or to telephone the Library on (2)77262, and ask to have books set aside for later collection by a helper.
If the books required are from our reference collections it may be possible (with notice) to make arrangements for them to be consulted elsewhere and under special circumstances, some reference material may be borrowed on a short loan, subject to permission from the History Librarian or the Deputy Librarian.
The Library's Issues and Enquiry Desk, which is on the first floor of the building, has an induction loop installed on the Maitland Room counter. Readers with hearing aids may prefer to go to that side for all of their Library transactions rather than to the West Room counter of the Desk. For readers with visual difficulties the Library now has an Easy View hands free magnifier and a Daylight PL desklamp available on request from the Library Desk.
