Old Indian Institute Building, Our Library houses the University of Oxford's main collection of undergraduate lending materials in both Medieval and Modern History, as well as in the History of Art. Designed primarily to serve undergraduates reading for the Honour School of Modern History and associated joint schools in the University, as well as undergraduates in the Department of History of Art, it also serves as a lending resource for graduate students and Senior Members of the History Faculty. Our collections comprise c. 85,000 volumes of predominantly British and European History from the late Roman period onwards, History of the Byzantine Empire, History of Russia and the former Soviet Union, History of India, and History of Australia and New Zealand, and growing coverage of the History of North and South America and the West Indies, and Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as Historiography, the History of Science, the History of Art, and Palaeography. There are current subscriptions to over 60 major History journals in print format, and further access is provided within the Library Reading Rooms to a large number of electronic journals and other non-print resources. Reference collections include set texts, primary sources, and other older and special materials. Most of the items in the History Faculty Library are listed within OLIS, our online catalogue (the Oxford Libraries Information Service), including all of our lending collections, journals, and items acquired from 2002 onwards. Some of our older and less-used reference books are listed only within the card catalogue, held in the Library. The History Faculty Library is part of the Humanities Team within Oxford University Library Services. Access to and usage of the Library are governed by the general Regulations Relating to the Use of the Facilities of the Oxford University Library Services, to which current and prospective readers are referred. The History Faculty Library is also managed and operated in tandem with the Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine Library and the History Collections and Services of the Bodleian Library. It is open to all current resident members of the University. General Enquiries: |
