Senior Research and Publication Editor, Oxford Dictionary of National Biography
Oxford DNB, OUP
I'm the Senior Research and Publication Editor for the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, a research and publishing project of the History Faculty and Oxford University Press.
The ODNB includes biographies of more than 59,000 people and is the world's largest collaborative research project in the humanities. The Dictionary was published (in print and online) in 2004, and has since been extended online with three updates a year.
With two other academic editors, I’m responsible for planning these updates, and then for commissioning, researching, editing, and writing Dictionary articles. In addition, we oversee the revision of existing entries in line with new research.
I also run the ODNB’s programme of public engagement. This includes partnerships with national museums and galleries, libraries, schools, and history societies—as well as talks, articles, a biography podcast, and social media outlets. Based at the University Press, I work with OUP staff on the Dictionary’s marketing, press profile, and the ODNB’s online development as a scholarly resource.
Prior to the ODNB, my own research was in eighteenth-century British social history, and I’ve since written on eighteenth-century ideas of biography and on national biographies.
