Before requesting IT support please have a look at the Oxford University Computing Services (OUCS) website. This contains lots of useful information and advice on common problems, including pages on:
The main computing facilities are in the Gerry Martin Computer Resources Room (GRR) in George Street. There are 18 thin client PCs and a laser printer. The computers run variety of software including Office, Endnote, SPSS. The room is open 30 minutes after the opening of the Faculty building and closes 30 minutes before the building is shut. This facility is available only for postgraduate students of the Faculty and undergraduate students taking courses taught in the room. This room may also be booked for teaching.
Before using the GRR for the first time you will need to fill in an application form . Once completed please return the form to the IT Office.
At first glace, the computers may seem like an internet browser and nothing else. If you double-click on the 'HP Connect' icon on the desktop, a 'Windows' screen will appear. Enter your username and password, and you will have full access to your files and server programs.
You will be given a password which must be changed as soon as possible. You will also need to change your password twice a year. There is a charge for using the printer in the GRR. Bills will normally be sent out termly.
Three computers are installed in the Common Room to be used by any member of the Faculty.
Did you know that you can access your History Faculty work from anywhere which has an internet connection? We use a ‘Terminal Server’ – a central unit that runs all of your computer programs (Stata, SPSS, Office and so forth) and stores all of your files. The terminal server is what you log into when you log into the computers in the GRR and Research Hall. You can also log into it from another office or from home. In fact, you can use all of these programs and edit all of yours files from any computer with an internet connection. What you see when you log in is identical to what you see when you log in here.
Both undergraduates and postgraduates may use their laptop in the History Faculty Library and Faculty Building. You will need to register your computer with the IT office first using the Laptop Registration Form.
However, it should be noted that the Faculty Building is wireless-enabled; thus you won't need to register your laptop or have a PC health check.
The George Street building is wireless-enabled. For further information, please see:
Postholder who need advice on purchasing laptops, desktops or other computer equipment, please ask in the IT Office.
