GRADUATE
PROGRAMME
M. Sc. and M. Phil. in
Economic and Social History
The University of Oxford offers two advanced taught graduate
courses in these subjects:
M.Sc. A twelve-month course including a qualifying
test in research methods and sources, two advanced papers, and a dissertation of
not more than 15,000 words.
M.Phil. A two-year course including a qualifying
test in research methods and sources, four advanced papers, and a dissertation
of not more than 30,000 words.
D.Phil. A three-year advanced research degree, writing a dissertation of not more than 100,000 words. The masters programmes include:
- An introduction to the research facilities available in Oxford
- Training in research methods and computing

Introduction to theories and approaches from a wide range of social
sciences, including economic and social history, economics,
anthropology, sociology, psychology, criminology, politics and more.

A choice from more than 25 specialized papers, including those
from related disciplines, for example, economics, sociology, or
the history of science, medicine, and technology
Students who complete either the M.Sc. or the M.Phil. and then wish
to proceed to a D.Phil may be able to count the terms of residence
kept, and the fees already paid, towards the residence requirements
and fees for the D.Phil.

ESRC Recognition
The courses are recognized for 1+3 and 2+2 research studentship awards
by the ESRC and also meet the ESRC research training requirements
for a D. Phil.
