Bohemian and Moravian Nobility and its Connections with European Scholars in the second half of the 16th and early 17th Centuries
The paper will concentrate on the relations among foreign upbringing and education of Bohemian and Moravian noblemen in the second half of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, and their actual education and extensive contacts with European scholars, which played an important role at that time. The essay will examine the character of such contacts, reasons for their establishment and development, their intensity and reflection in various aspects of the political, cultural and religious history. With regard to the background of resources and confessional composition of the Bohemian and Moravian noblemen, particular attention will be paid to the protestant milieu. The essay will, however, tackle some of the issues regarding Catholic noblemen and their contacts with European scholastic community.
Some of the above mentioned aspects will be explained in greater detail by means of a micro-study (e.g. the Bohemian and Moravian nobility’s interest in contemporary scholarship). Václav Budovec of Budov will serve as an example for pursuing his lasting interest in theology (not only Protestant). His intensive antipathies towards particular unorthodox religious streams (mainly antitrinitarism), which were also reflected in his own literary work, will not be missed.
