How to Apply

Full details of the applications procedure for graduate study at Oxford are contained in the University's Graduate Studies Prospectus which may be obtained on request from the Graduate Admissions Office, University Offices, Wellington Square, Oxford OX1 2JD. All those intending to apply for the M.St. or M.Phil. in Byzantine Studies should obtain a copy of the Prospectus and a University application form from the Graduate Admissions Office. Applicants for courses in Byzantine Studies should have at least a good first degree (BA or equivalent), or similar qualification, from a recognised university. They should also have at least a working knowledge of either ancient or modern Greek.

Completed application forms should be returned to the Graduate Admissions Office by the deadlines advertised in the Graduate Studies Prospectus and in the admissions information of the History Faculty; the latter offers also advice for the preparation of studentship applications to the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). Candidates should especially note the importance of ensuring that all supporting material, including references, are sent to the Graduate Admissions Office by the advertised deadlines so that consideration of their application is not delayed or impeded.

In completing the form candidates must indicate

  1. the type of degree sought (Probationary Research Student leading to an M.Litt. or D.Phil. on a Byzantine topic, M.St. in Byzantine Studies or M.Phil. in Byzantine Studies) and
  2. the area of their interest (History, Theology, Art and Archaeology, Literature, Eastern Studies) and whether their interests fail in the period either before or after 500 AD.

This information is helpful to the committee which reviews the applications.

Any offer of a place to read for the M.St., M.Phil. or PRS leading to M.Litt. or D.Phil. made by a Faculty Board guarantees the applicant the offer of a college place, though not necessarily in the applicant's preferred college.

Further information may be obtained from the Graduate Admissions Office, at the address given above, or from one of the members of the Committee for Byzantine Studies whose names and addresses are given in the list of Senior Members.
